What’s the Difference Between Malware vs. Ransomware?

Malware and ransomware both pose serious security threats to your businesses’ operating systems, just in different ways. Most of the time, large sums of money are on the line when it comes to these kinds of security breaches, so your company must take extra precautions and be aware of how to spot the difference between malware vs. ransomware.

Malware

Malware is a type of software that intentionally causes damage to your server. The most common use of malware is to access your data and steal your information, so hackers can use it to gain access to bank accounts, confidential information and even steal your identity at times. Malware can take form in very different ways; a few that you may be familiar with are viruses and computer bugs. For more examples of types of malware to protect your business from, click here.

Ransomware

Ransomware is a form of malware that causes damage to your computer restricting access to confidential information until a ransom is paid. In a new 2020 report from Coveware, the average cost of a ransomware attack has skyrocketed to about $84,116 and 16.2 days of company downtime. Ransomware attacks have not only been increasing in cost but also in sophistication. Therefore, it is extremely important that your business is well protected and that your employees are aware of what to look out for.
