3 Tips for Protecting Your Business From Ransomware

Ransomware is a form of malware that causes damage to your computer restricting access to confidential information until a ransom is paid. SMBs are key ransomware targets 70% of the time therefore, it is extremely important that you are proactive in preventing ransomware and prepared to handle it if it were to occur. Here are a few tips from our tech team:

1. Don’t Click Blindly

We can never stress this point enough. Don’t click if you don’t know what the link is leading to! One of the main ways that cyberattackers gain access to your accounts through ransomware is through malicious links on websites or phishing emails. Here are a few additional resources to help:

2. Backup Your Data

Backing up your data is another great way to take proactive steps and prevent ransomware from getting out of hand. It’s important to make regular backups so your data is constantly being updated and maintained. The best and most protective backup method is the 3-2-1 strategy. The 3-2-1 strategy is to ensure that you have 3 backups, 2 different media formats, and 1 of the copies offsite. With a backup, if a hacker was able to get into your server, you would have access to information before even having to consider paying off the ransom.

3. Never Pay a Ransom

It’s crucial to follow this step and never pay off the ransom. Paying off the ransom doesn’t guarantee the return of your data, and it encourages the cyberattacker to ask for more. If you ever encounter a ransomware attack, it’s best to first disconnect from the internet, restore your backup, and seek help from your professional IT service provider.
