3 Cybersecurity Threats for Small Businesses

Small businesses are just as susceptible to cybersecurity threats as large businesses, if not more because they don’t have the proper resources to prevent attacks, and oftentimes, they don’t think they’re a target. In fact, 62% of all cyberthreat victims are small businesses. Here are three cybersecurity threats for small businesses to be aware of.

Phishing

Phishing attacks account for the largest number of cybersecurity threats for small businesses. Phishing emails are designed to look like trustworthy emails sent from within your company or a reputable source. The goal of a phishing email is to have you open it and reveal sensitive company or personal information. The data gained is typically used for the hacker to access money, identity, or to infiltrate a network. According to the Verizon 2015 Data Breach Investigations Report, 23% of recipients open phishing messages, so it is very important that your small business is aware of what to look for.

Malicious Code: Ransomware and Malware

Malicious code like ransomware and malware are typically spread throughout a computer by opening a malicious link or attachment in an email. Once the link or attachment is clicked, malicious code can be downloaded on your computer and your security can be put in jeopardy.

Malware is a type of software that intentionally causes damage to your server and ransomware is a type of malicious code that causes damage to your computer restricting access to confidential information until a ransom is paid.

It’s important for small businesses to be aware of these cybersecurity threats because if they occur they can cause your organization to lose large amounts of money and data. Here’s more information on how to differentiate malicious code and cyberthreats.

Weak Passwords

Lastly, weak passwords can cost small businesses lots of time, money and confidential information. According to a 2019 Google survey, 52% of people use the same password for multiple (but not all) accounts. Most people don’t even realize the damage that using compromised passwords can cause, so it’s important, especially in small businesses to educate your employees and consider using strong password management software.
