Get to Know Marius de Beer, Project Engineer

Marius came to MIS Solutions in April 2017 and with his quick wit and humor, has been a source of entertainment for the staff ever since. He is one of our wonderful remote engineers who lives in South Africa. Oh, and he’s a connoisseur of sausages, beer and “braai.”

Where do you live?

I live in a town called Strand. It’s about 25 miles from Cape Town and surrounded by Mountains. It has some of the most beautiful white beaches in Cape Town. Strand is located in False Bay – one of the biggest breeding grounds of Great White sharks in the world. This is also the reason why I refuse to go to the beach or get in the water.

Tell me about your family.

I am married to Carmen. We have three kids: Nina (12), Emma (10) and Marcus who turned 3 this month. The girls do modern dancing and are quite good at it. Both qualified for the South African team that went to Los Angeles for the world championships in Performing Arts this year. They also qualified for the Dance Stars International competition finals in Croatia. Marcus is a beautiful blue-eyed blonde boy. We have two dogs, a Labrador and an American Staffy.

What is your favorite food?

I love curry. At my previous job, I worked with Muslims and developed a deep love an appreciation for their food. No one makes lamb curry better than they do. Although I have learned some of their cooking, I still can’t cook it the way they do.

Other than that – as a South African I love to braai (barbeque) and we do it regularly. There’s no other way to cook steak than over a wood fire.

What’s the craziest/funniest/most outrageous thing you’ve ever witnessed/done?

I have been in three armed robberies, and have been hijacked once. I guess that counts as outrageous.

What is something most people don’t know about you?

In my 20s I played bass guitar in a band. We had quite the following and played at several big venues in and around Cape Town. Apart from bass guitar, I also played electric guitar and drums.

When I was 25, I decided to take a break from IT and studied electrical engineering, and finished NQF level 4 and worked on a mine for a couple of months, before moving to Cape Town.

Favorite book?

Decipher by Stel Pavlou and Fight Club by Chuck Palahniuk

Favorite quote?

“Non Ducor, Duco” which is Latin and translates to “I am not led, I lead.”

Tell us a little bit about what you do each day.

I am on the projects team which handles all new client onboarding. We build the servers/cloud, we install and configure their software and create their cloud desktops. It is hard work, but I love it.

What’s the most fun thing about your job and why?

I love that we learn new things every day. We meet a lot of people and we get challenged daily.

What is the most challenging part of your job?

The volume of knowledge we acquire in this job is staggering. We need to know everything about everything. It is a challenge, but it is fun.

What do you like to do for fun outside of work?

Oh, I have so many different things I get up to when given the time. I love cooking, so that happens a lot. I am also an avid gamer – both PC and XBOX.

Sometimes I will get behind the drum set when I am home alone and just play along with my favorite Metallica songs.

I tinker with electronics as well. I have recently taken an interest in cryptocurrencies so I am in the planning stages of building a crypto-miner.

Other than that, I write code whenever I can, but unfortunately do not get time for it very often.

I make artisan pork sausage as well as brew beer a couple of times a year.
