What the Heck is Sandboxing???

Or zero-day? Or browser hijacking? Or any number of other tech terms thrown about by computer whizzes? Sure you could Google sandboxing or visit Wikipedia to learn it’s a security mechanism for separating running programs. But it’s way more fun to go to Sideways dictionary to get a better perspective. It’s sort of like a dictionary, but instead of definitions, Sideways uses analogies to explain geek speak in human-friendly terms.

Sideways is a project of the Washington Post and Jigsaw, formerly Google Ideas. It’s a technology incubator of Alphabet, the parent company of Google and several other companies. On its website, Sideways touts itself as a “tool for finding and sharing helpful analogies to explain technology. Because if everyone understand technology better, we can make technology work better for everyone.

So what is sandboxing?

One of the analogies on Sideways explains it like this: It’s like a controlled explosion. If it looks like a suspect package, you place it in a skip, fill it with sand, and detonate it from a safe distance.

At MIS, we understand the importance of speaking in a language that everyone can understand. That’s why our engineers are experts in explaining techy topics in very non-techy terms. And we’ll never make you feel like a dumb dumb for asking questions.
